There is a whole raft of sins that are the fruit of a life devoid of self-control.  Perhaps the most deadly of these (both literally and  figuratively) is "anger."  You can be certain of this:  anger is an enemy of everything the Holy Spirit seeks to accomplish within you.

If "pride" were a coin, the flip side  of that coin would be "ungodliness".  But ungodliness may not be what you think.  Wickedness and ungodliness are not necessarily the same thing.  Ungodliness in the  words of Jerry Bridges is, "simply living your life with little or no thought of God’s will, His glory, or your dependence upon Him."

Blind spots:  we all have them.  Pride is the granddaddy of them all.  Pride is the toxic soil in which all virtues either wither or die.   The problem with blind spots is that the things we fail to see in our own lives we easily see in the lives of others.

The Christian life is not an easy one:  it is a life of self-denial and surrender to the lordship of Christ.  The temptation to give up can be huge.  This is not sprint but a marathon.

"Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial, for when he has persevered he will receive the crown of life that God has promised those who love Him" (Jas. 1:12)

On several different occasions the people of God in the Old Testament were called upon to renew their covenant with God.  The were called to remember and to re-Member.  Jesus did the same with His disciples.  Today is a day for you also to remember and to re-Member; to recommit to the work God has called us to as the Hillsboro Church of Christ.

For too long the Church has trusted in the signboard our front, the open door, and the Yellow Pages ad to bring people TO church.  While these may be helpful, the Scripture is clear that we are to be a going, inviting people.

Most of us have had the privilege of being blessed by someone who is generous.  They give freely, abundantly, and without reservation.  They even do it with a smile on their face.  Most people admire a generous-heart person, so why is it that their are not more people like them?  How can we cultivate generosity in our own lives?

Every Christian was born again to be transformed into the image Jesus.  He is the only one we should aspire to be like.  God has given us His Spirit for this very purpose.  One of the best ways that likeness can be seen by others is when will say "I will" to living a life that selflessly serves others in Jesus' name.

It is an admirable and Christ-honoring to be childlike.  It is quite another thing to be "childish".  It should be the glory of God and of Jesus that should motivate everything we do in our communal gatherings of worship.   We must learn what it means to "worship in spirit and in truth" (John 4:23-24).  We must rediscover the importance and power of the gathered Body of Christ in worship.

No one is an island.  No individual is the body of Christ.  Jesus is not a bodiless head.  If you are in Christ the Church is important to you.  If you see the Church as of no significance for your life you are disconnected from the head.  We must determine to stay connected to Jesus and to one another if we are to fulfill the mission given us by Jesus.
